French King Francis I commissioned Giovanni da Verrazzano to discover the port of New York. Jacques Cartier discovered the province of New France in 1534. New France becomes a royal province in 1663 under Louis XIV. However, the French troops were tied in the Seven Years war and lost to a surprise attack of the British (lead by James Wolfe) in 1759, before winter sets in. Meantime, France lost Louisiana to Spain. The French loss made France an alley of the US in its independent war in 1776.
